This week we have a tough 45 on the Tropico label. The Godfather of Steel Band funk, Clive Bradley, joins the Esquires with Brass on "He's A Strong Man". Clive was a master of the pan, but he switches it up and slides over to the keyboard here as the group takes on a Stax influenced Organ swinger with monster drums and an infectious horn section. There will be many more posts about Mr. Bradley in the future as his output spans five decades. Unfortunately he passed away in 2005 (the NY Times did give him a great obituary), but his legacy of deeply inventive Caribbean compositions lives on!

Welcome to the Heatwave
As we ring out the eleventh year of the second millennium I'd like to set the stage for 2012! There will be a lot of Tropical Heatwave news in the coming months...I can't wait to share more Caribbean sounds with y'all!
Here's a good one to start with ~ This obscure 45 on Pauls Records from 1975 is by Sambo with a stripped down cover of Barabas's proto-disco classic "Woman" ~ with a distinctive tropical sound that is chock full of heavy percussion and spaced out synths!
