Guest Mix from DJ Chicus

Happy Valentine's day!  We got a surprise gift in the inbox today!
Brooklynite, man about town & old school DJ compadre ~ DJ Chicus blesses us with a killer mix for the lovin' season! When he's not busy running Redbud Records [Reggae] & Dither Down Records [Nu-Disco/House/Indie] ~ Chad is busy slinging wax around the world.

Big ups for including the McBoing Boing Lazer Dub version of Sheila Hylton's "It's Gonna Take A Lot Of Love"!

And now a few words from the selectah:
"It's a few of days before valentines day when I remember that I had intended to put out a mix then. But am I even inspired to do so and what type of mix will it be? As I start to sort through different love songs in multiple genres I quickly realized that I wanted to do a reggae mix. This was partly out of inspiration through the strength of the songs and partly because it had been so long since I had made a straight reggae mix. As I started sorting songs for various themes I quickly realized that many of the hottest songs I was considering were sang by women. Since I love niche mixes, I instantly knew what I had to do. So I put together this rather deep and soulful collection of choice love songs sang by some of the first ladies of reggae, both old school and new school. As usual you will hear many covers of different classics and an edit, remix or dub here and there."

 Enjoy! McBB

Waxist Selecta is Island Grown

Today we are blessed with a new mix from the Parisian Pied Piper of Tropical Sounds ~ Waxist Selecta!

Julien Minarro aka Waxist Selecta is a tireless champion of the Island sounds that have caught fire over the last few years. Having grown up on a small island paradise located between Madagascar & South Africa, he was immersed in the sun & sand vibrations that helped mold his musical tastes. "This unique experience has taught me a lot of things." he says, "among which the love of people from other cultures than mine & the love of music. As a consequence, it is no surprise that as a record collector I've been attracted by island music."

His Tropical Heatwave mix, "Island Grown", is like greeting old friends, as he has chosen a lot of my personal favorite tracks. It is a Tropical Bouillabaisse that brings together the flavors of the sea and spices of the islands in a hearty stew that will warm your bones and get you ready for a long night of dancing!

"The present mix is mostly made of rare disco & funk & soul joints recorded in the Caribbean in the 70s." Waxist explains. "I also choose to select 2 'creole' sung tracks from the French speaking Caribbean as I think they are another qualitative facet of that sounds. The mix ends up on an afro-funk sound from JM Tim & Foty."

You can find more WS sounds on his Soundcloud page.
And join him on Facebook here.
Stream it through Mixcloud or Download here.

Fela The Musical ~ Cast Party

My partner in Caribbean Crime ~ Love On The Run ~ & I were honored to DJ for the Fela! The Musical Cast party recently!  The intimate affair was held at the swanky men's clothing boutique Seize sur Vingt in Soho.  The fancy duds were pushed to the side to make way for the funkee dancers ~ and dance they did...there was even a spontaneous Bus Stop moment!  It was a treat to have so many of the cast members, including Fela himself, Sahr Ngaujah, getting down to the Tropical Heat Wave sounds!  Here's a little video I put together from the night...

The Blue Notes ~ Can I Change My Mind

The Blue Notes were a staple at Nassau clubs like the Rum Keg Room & The Back Room at the Barmoral Beach Hotel in the late 60's. Early on their line up included of a young Frankie Zhivago and Ralph Munnings. By the time of their 3rd release, "Moving Up with The Blue Notes" (Proctor-Blue Records), the group consisted of: Godfrey Deveaux (drums), Lawrence Makeba Rolle (bass), Garry Davis (guitar) & Marvin Henfield (vocals). The overall vibe is a soulful Caribbean jazz style which lends itself nicely to cuts like "Fever" and "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", but the standout is the band's deeply moving cover of Tyrone Davis's soul classic "Can I Change My Mind".
Enjoy!

Island Jazz Quartet ~ Feel Like Makin' Love

This time around we have one of the deepest steel drum cuts out there!
Arranged by Mark Hinds and privately released on his eponymous record label.
Mr. Hinds takes on the Eugene McDaniels/Roberta Flack groover with a massive rhythm section...I really wish he would have let the drummer loose a little, because whoever it is on the skins is in the pocket! Nonetheless the quartet supplies a perfect bed to float the smooth steel drums as they ride over the track like a warm tropical breeze.
